Commissioner Cheri Nijssen-Jordan was appointed to the Commission in November 2022, following an impressive 40-year career in medicine that has included over three decades of leadership experience in Alberta’s medical system.
Starting as a General Practitioner in rural Saskatchewan, Commissioner Nijssen-Jordan moved to Calgary in 1993 to be the Director and Division Head of Paediatric Emergency Medicine at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. She later served as Facility Medical Director of the South Health Campus hospital and has taught paediatrics at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine.
In her latest role at Alberta Health Services, Commissioner Cheri Nijssen-Jordan served as the COVID Vaccine Task Force Co-lead where she co-led the team responsible for coordinating the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines throughout the province at the height of the pandemic.
As a medical administrator, she has held key roles in program management, quality improvement, disaster preparedness, facility design, and health system access and flow. She also has demonstrated a special interest in equity, diversity and inclusion around the world.
Commissioner Cheri Nijssen-Jordan has volunteered internationally with Doctors Without Borders. She has also served on the boards of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, the Canadian Medical Alert Foundation, and the City of Calgary Medical Control Board for Emergency Medical Services.
Commissioner Nijssen-Jordan holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Calgary.
