Our Commission will be saying goodbye to five commissioners and welcoming two new ones, following Calgary City Council’s fall appointment process.
The changes this year were greater than usual because of amendments to Alberta’s Police Act that required our Commission to shrink from 15 people back to our former size of 12. Our size was temporarily increased in April 2023 to allow for a transition between police commissions being entirely appointed by city councils and a model where the province makes some of the appointments. A mix of municipal and provincial appointees is typical for police boards in Canada and was even the practice in Alberta through the 1970s.
Our Commission would like to thank Commissioners Kim Lynch Proctor, Theresa Roessel, Jeff French, Raj Dhaliwal and Marilyn North Peigan for all their valuable contributions over the years. The different perspectives and expertise they brought to our boardroom table will be dearly missed, and we wish them all the best in their future pursuits.
Councillor Terry Wong and Commissioner Samuel Hope have been appointed as new members and will join our Commission for the first time at our November regular meeting. Council has also reappointed Chair Shawn Cornett and Vice-Chair Amtul Siddiqui for another two-year term. The eight other commissioners were not up for reappointment as they are still in the middle of their terms.
Welcome Councillor Wong and Commissioner Hope!
